MEDICAL PROFESSOR GOES VIRAL FOR INNOVATIVE TEACHING METHODS

Photos of a Nanjing medical school professor have become hugely popular online. In the photos, the professor can be seen teaching without a shirt on in front of the class, using his own body to explain the lesson. Many students say he has changed their views on teaching.

The professor, named Li Lei, teaches human anatomy at Nanjing Medical University in Nanjing, Jiangsu province. While teaching, Li often becomes so enthusiastic that he lifts up his own clothes in order to demonstrate to students the exact locations of different organs in the human body.

Li has had an undeniable influence on a number of his students. One freshman reported feeling proud of herself after drawing various muscles directly on her upper arm for a more visual study. A doctor at a hospital in Nanjing said he still clearly remembers Li’s classes, even though he graduated 10 years ago.

MISSING CHILDREN WATER BOTTLE CAMPAIGN IN QINGDAO INCITES CONTROVERSY

A company in Qingdao, Shandong province recently launched a limited edition line of water bottles whose labels are printed with the information and photos of missing children. With the aim of raising awareness to help bring the lost children home, the firm explained that they hope consumers can offer useful clues. Nevertheless, the move has been controversial, as some consumers doubt the company’s intentions.

According to the company’s general manager, surnamed Li, this reward policy was inspired by movies about missing children in 2015. Li and his staff were deeply moved bythose movies, which inspired them to come up with the water bottle idea. The companyobtained information about the missing children – with the permission of the children’sparents – from Baobeihuijia, the largest website for missing children in China. Thecompany has also promised a 100,000-RMB reward for anyone who successfully brings amissing child home.

Moreover, the firm plans to expand their “missing children bottles” to the entire country, and eventually establish a foundation to help look for the children. However, the bottleshave not yet yielded any useful clues.

What they have done is cause heated public debate. On one hand, some believe the campaign qualifies as an incredible act of public service. Meanwhile, detractors argue that it is nothing more than a publicity stunt, made all the more shameful by how the campaign plays on people’s emotions.

“It is a charity,” said Yang Daobo, the deputy dean and professor of Liaocheng University’slaw school. Yang added that, given the authorization the company received fromBaobeihuijia and the children’s parents, this marketing strategy is legal and admirable. The only possible legal issue is if the water company fails to follow through on its offered reward.

CHINA DEVELOPS WEARABLE EXOSKELETON THAT MIMICS HUMAN KNEE

A wearable robotic leg developed by a team from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) is purportedly one of the first devices of its kind to mimic natural knee movement.

The 1-meter-tall robotic leg weighs 19 kilograms. From top to bottom, it features more than 10 joints and dozens of sensors that help patients to walk normally.

This exoskeleton is more advanced and simulates the behavior of a natural knee joint more closely than previous models, according to an employee at the robot development center.Several companies have shown interest in investing in the invention, noted Hong Cheng, the chief executive of the center.

Starting from scratch in 2010, the UESTC team spent only five years developing the robot. That time frame is especially notable when compared to those of overseas scientists working toward the same goal, Hong pointed out. He added that many Chinese universities have now established wearable exoskeleton development centers, driving forward achievements in that area.

Medical robots have conducted 600,000 operations in 800 hospitals around the world. They can also be used in athletic and military projects, Hong said.
